Hijacked! – Part 1

I spent five hours yesterday working on a computer at a church member's house. When I first got there, the Network Interface Card (NIC) that the computer uses to connect to the Network (and the Internet) was not working. The card was communicating with the FIOS modem, but the computer would not talk to the card. The user could not find the distribution CDs for the computer, and without connectivity, we had a problem. I found out during the process that it would not have mattered, someon had replaced the mother board on the computer, the internal NIC did not work at all, and the NIC card I was trying to get to work was an add in. Three hours later, I had the computer talking to the Internet. Unfortunately, the computer was infested with Malware that hijacked the browser. This is the same type of problem I had here a couple of montrhs ago, but his was much more advanced and deeper. I could at least get to websites and download fixes. His computer blocked attempts to get to websites, redirected to websites, caused AVG to exit on fatal errors, blocked Spybot and Norton 360 from installing, a bad scene!I will be going back over this morning armed with a memory stick loaded with some Hijacker fixes. You NEED to have GOOD and active firewall, Anti Virus, Anti Spyware. This malware is bad news! If the rest of this stuff will not work, he is going to have to clean his hard drive and resintall everything from scratch.To be continued…..
